1 Variants are Piedpoudre and Piepowder (from Old French pied puidreaux, a pedlar or petty chapman frequenting markets and fairs). It was a court of record by which the owner of a toll could, through his steward, make on-the-spot decisions regarding disputes and offences relating to fairs and markets. — Editor.
